Sussex Downs

The South Downs in west Sussex was my mission for dawn. Fairly steep area, get's the blood circulating after a sleepy rise. Sun was forecast so 'must' try a get something with the early light. But as usual on the Downs the atmosphere was hazy, softening the early morning light and contrast. But the layers of haze did create an atmosphere in the distance and also provides the third dimension in photography...depth. Mist, fog or haze is a good substitute to add depth from the conventional foreground interest.

Another weather forecast source mentioned interesting cloudscapes that day. I didn't want to expect too much as clouds are so dynamic and fluid, always changing every second. But as I was retreating back mammatus clouds crossed my way above. With limited compositional options (gentle hill and sky) I just took the shot and like the result with the simple composition. Hopefully evokes mood...a primary target, the sum of all the ingredients that make up a good photograph.
